LEAN Leadership Concepts

Using Lean leadership concepts will allow you to become a learning organization with a methodical system for process improvement and measured results. This Lean course will provide an in-depth learning experience that includes an introduction and overview of Lean concepts, structured problem solving, sustainable process improvement techniques, Lean leadership, and how to become a learning organization.

Lean is a system for making improvement that can be applied to any healthcare setting. Doing things the way they have always been done is insufficient to keep pace with the rate of change.

COURSE CURRICULUM

LEAN - Overview (March 6, 2018)

Description

This session will provide a broad overview of lean concepts. It is intended to provide a framework for deeper study in subsequent sessions. Participants will leave this session with a new perspective on how to view his/her own work as well as how to engage in making improvement to their work.

  • This session will Introduce Lean concepts and how they can be applied by leaders in long-term care to create an environment which engages its people in solving the many challenges in this industry.
  • Describe key differences between a traditional organization and a lean organization.
  • Provide framework of discussion for sessions 2 & 3
  • NOTE: IF YOU HAVE ATTENDED A PRESENTATION BY THIS SPEAKER BEFORE, SOME OF THE CONCEPTS IN THIS SESSION WILL BE REVIEW; HOWEVER, THEY WILL BE COMPLEMENTED WITH ADDITIONAL MATERIAL.

LEAN - Problem Solving (April 17, 2018)

Description

Any person performing a process day after day, year after year, can become blind to the inherent problems with that process. Fixing a problem starts with the ability to SEE the problem. Many tools of lean aid our ability to see problems we have neglected.

In session 1, we introduced the concepts of value and waste. In this session, we will complete a deeper dive into the concepts of value, waste and how to apply these concepts to identify waste in our own work processes. Further, we will explore some of the tools of lean and practice some of these tools that we might be able to apply them in our own work environment following this training.

  • How lean tools help us to see the waste/problems in our processes.
  • Mapping to see the problems inherent in our processes
  • Visual Management – how visual management aids is in improving and managing our processes

LEAN - Deeper Dive (June 12, 2018)

Description

For those wanting to engage in a lean journey, a culture of problem solving is essential. This culture requires many skilled problem solvers. The only competitive advantage is an organization’s ability to solve problems faster than its competition.

In sessions 1 & 2, we provided an overview of several lean tools. One purpose of those tools is to help highlight problems which need to be solved. Once those problems have been highlighted, a capable problem solver must be ready to investigate the problem and lead the team to eliminate the problem in a sustainable manner. The presentation will cover the various components to problem solving and provide practice with these components.

Steve has more than 20 years of experience in healthcare, manufacturing and service as a full-time improvement leader. His knowledge of lean principles, and his understanding of how to relate the processes of lean to a healthcare system are important in helping healthcare professionals focus their energies and measurably demonstrate their successes. In his previous position with Mercy Health Saint Mary’s, he led a team of ten lean coaches to develop their organizations lean strategy. Steve’s ability to use his previous experience with lean principles is crucial in assisting aging services providers in their development of an innovative lean management and delivery system in quality, safety, patient satisfaction, and continuous improvement. Steve’s leadership in advancing lean systems and programs, as well as his skill in teaching all levels of leadership and frontline staff will help your organization form a foundational system for delivering the best care and service, for all individuals, in all aging services providers.

To assist you with continuing education needed to support your license or certification, LeadingAge Michigan Educational Foundation will apply to the following organizations to receive pre-approved cred hours for:
