Adult Foster Care/Homes for the Aged

Adult foster care (AFC) homes provide care to adults who are frail, mentally ill, physically handicapped, or with a developmental disability and who also supervision, protection and personal care.   Public Act 218 limits the size of an AFC to 20 or fewer persons and that services be provided 24 hours a day, 5 or more days a week, for 2 or more consecutive weeks for compensation from the Medicaid Program.

Homes for the Aged (HFA) provide care specifically to persons who are over age of 60 and are licensed for 21 or more persons, unless they are operated as part of a nursing home. HFAs are under no requirements for the number of hours or consecutive days service.

AFCs and HFAs both provide 24 hour personal care, but by law cannot provide continuous ongoing nursing care.  Residents living in AFCs and HFAs may receive hospice or skilled nursing services from an outside agency.
