Types of Member Services

Assisted living is a combination of housing, supportive services, personalized assistance and sometimes health care designed to meet the individual needs of those who need help with activities of daily living (such as bathing and grooming) and instrumental activities of daily living (such as shopping and meal preparation).

The State of Michigan does not legally define or license assisted living communities outside of the requirements for Adult Foster Care and Homes for the Aged.  Assisted living communities in Michigan vary greatly in level of service and support provided, due in large part to a lack of state definition and requirements.  An Assisted Living Facility can range from a small neighborhood residence to large multilevel apartment complexes.

In Michigan, some communities licensed as Adult Foster Care or Homes for the Aged, and Continuing Care Retirement Communities also call themselves assisted living. For those organizations, individual licensure rules dictate what services are required or how services may be provided.
